The Perfect Christmas Present

I solved this years annual challenge of getting Mrs DIY the perfect Christmas gift, I have purchased her a really beautiful winch.
Every year I have this quandary as her birthday is only 10 days before Christmas and it stretches my creativity to find some gift that would really be appreciated but this year I had a moment of  shear genius.
Its a Harken Radial 46 2STA Winch, I'm sure she will be absolutely delighted...
A self tailing model, that means Mrs DIY willl not have to ask me to leave my steering duties and heave on the Genoa sheet...as well as keep the boat on course.
It's the ultimate in multi-tasking solutions.
It's the gift that will go on giving.

The Stern Step

The stern step has now been installed, a very tricky operation, sitting in a moving dinghy, drilling small holes very close to the waterline!
I might have overdone the sealant but better to be safe than sorry, it was a very messy clean-up.
Now we will be able to get on and off the boat with a little dignity, without having to hang off the stern ladder, plus we maybe able to load the dog on and off the boat when we are cruising around the Marlborough Sounds.
The design was a combination of information supplied by two Members of the Westerly Owners Association (ZEBEK & Camomile) who have similar yachts, luckily, I was able to see the Camomile model in action in Wellington, while it was on its world cruise.
It makes a very good place to store the dinghy, fits perfectly, more good luck than good management, I can even lift it on end by myself but I will need to install some extra pulleys to make it work efficiently.
Note: I was going to tidy-up the rope-work today but a very large weather front came through so I have to leave for another day.

12 Ton of Lime Chip

After many years of waiting, 4 years actually, we have at last had delivered and spread 12 Tons of 15mm lime chip for the driveway, all spread and delivered in half an hour! Two truck loads.
The question I must ask myself is, "why didn't I do this sooner/" maybe it was the thought of raking the whole thing to make it smooth, then getting a roller to compact it.

Facebook

I have spent the last hour trying to delete my facebook account, a total waste of time you can't!.
Even made a new facebook  page including a new email account, accidently clicked on some little icon and hello, I have sent friend request to someone called Chrissy Hines and some German fellow called Karl Zukkerman, sorry guys.

Perth Holiday - Western Australia

At last we have been able to visit My sister an brother-in law in Perth, what a great visit, wonderful hosts, lots of wine tasting and even some wine drinking.
Went visit to Margaret River area which is about a 3 hour drive from Perth where some very kind friends of my sister had lent us their holiday house for a few days, we were able to use this as a base to visit the wineries of the area, lots of good food and Aust wines were consumed.
Busselton Jetty - Margaret River
Although we had a couple of grey days, the visit was just perfect, a very nice place to live.
The visit coincided with the US elections, which, as my sister who was a AFS student and spent a year at school in the US, now is a confirmed Democrat - her American sister was/is working for the Democrat party, so there was slightly more than a academic interest in the results.

Happily Obama was re-elected president, I hate to think what would have happened if the Republicans had won, considering their past performance with Bush and the Wof MD and the current situations in Gaza and the Middle East.

We had an American themed dinner to celebrate. "Cheers Patty - well done"

Back to real life in NZ and the body clock almost adjusted, I have been working on fitting the boarding platform on the stern of the boat, so we can get the dog on and off, if this doesn't work he's off to dog prison when we go away sailing.

Finally, getting our garden back in order, it's amazing how quickly plants grow at this time of year.
Had to mow our lawns 3 times to get them back under control!

No Splash

At last we can turn the taps on, without being splashed by our trendy Italian Designer taps, it took a trip to Perth, Western Australia and a visit to IKEA (we don't have one in NZ) but now we have replaced all the taps throughout the house, you don't have to stand side on, to keep out of the way of spraying water, now makes cleaning ones teeth a small pleasure.

One Down

Well I shot one dead, a rabbit that is, which instantly reminded me why I let my firearms licence lapse and I gave away my rifle and shotgun.
I really don't like killing things, even rabbits but still I need to rid our garden of these destructive little animals.
Note: Rabbits are classed as a pest in New Zealand

Accuracy!

The airgun has arrived and assembled, then I to fired a couple of pellets to get my eye-in, at this point I would like to say I class myself as a fairly good shot, in fact I made the school shooting team for a short time in my younger days.
Sitting here writing this blog about my experiences of not losing my touch, dead-eye, etc a few words spring to mind, which would could easily describe the results, a few of them are, Barn, at, couldn't, 5 paces and hit.
The result is the pesky rabbits will continue live-long, dig and eat our garden.
I have set up a large target to improve the score and to date have finally managed to hit the target, that's the target card, not the printed bit with the cross and circle....

Pesky Rabbits

Finally the decision has been made, I have purchased a rifle to dispatch the rabbits that are creating havoc with our plants and garden.
After much discussion, Mrs DIY agreed, this was the only way to go as poisoning wasn't an option, we have a Labrador dog that eats anything that vaguely resembles food.
I found the air rifle on 'Trade Me', a NZ web auction site, at good price and less than the same rifle I found on a US site and that was comparing $ for $.
I would have like to get a real one but as my gun licence had expired, didn't feel like going through the full Police interview and home visit for a new one, so it's an air gun, still the muzzle velocity is 1200fps which is fine for rabbits...
All I need to do is aim straight!

Already have downloaded some Hugh Fearnley-Whittingsall (River Cottage) recipes from the UK Guardian web site.
This is a showing of real commitment and optimism on the writers part.
mmmm rabbit pie for dinner...

Head Down In the Heads

For the past two days I have been rebuilding the plumbing system in the forward head of the boat, fitting the new toilet and holding tank.
There's very little room to move around and fit the pipework, because of the limited room you have to work, jambed in a half sitting position, with your left arm threatening to dislocate itself.
Halfway through the installation I made the decision to replace all the existing pipework, it had been there for at least 20 years, Not a pleasant job! I won't continue this description of it's condition any further...
Now we have nice clean white sanitation pipes.
I should have the installation completed with about another 3 hours work, it will be a great day when we will be able to flush.
The next on the 'to do' list is the stern head.

Snow!

I knew I shouldn't have mentioned snow, last night we had a polar blast move up the country and now the road over the Rimatukas is now closed...and more is forecast.
Wellington has a beautiful day, Martinborough, rubbish, the mountain range that runs up the centre of the island and divides the Wairarapa from the Wellington region makes a huge difference to our weather.
The dog (Oscar) woke me up, deciding at 1am  in the morning (It was freezing) to become an outside dog and move to his chair under the barn deck, normally he's an absolute wimp when it comes to bad weather and will spend his day guarding the heating system but not today.

What Difference a Year Makes

The pictures were taken at about the same time of  year give or take a few weeks , this year we have hardly any blossom, usually the driveway Almond trees are smothered in blossom.
Global warming, or just a change in the weather pattern?
 This Year
Last Year an unusual dump of snow, first for 30 years!

Table for the Gallery

The Table is completed for the gallery, a place for people to sign cheques, and the EFTPOS machine for credit cards.

Mrs DIY supplied the picture from a shop window she had passed (reference only!) and told me this should be easy to make, so...

Wind

What a wild night, we had winds of around 100-120 Kms/hr.and then rain.
Reminding me of an old mariners rhyme.
"Wind before rain, it'll be fine again.
Rain before wind get the topsails in"
The saying goes: 'Come the wind before the rain, soon be setting sail again.' When a cold front is moving in, if the wind picks up before the rain, the storm is likely to be less severe and shorter. If the rain arrives before the wind, the opposite is true.

Holding Tank

More progress on the final rebuild of Duamara, (Thursday's Child of Lee) I made a mock-up of the holding tank out of Coreflute and Gaffer Tape, just to make sure it would it would fit and I could get it into the space available. (51 litre capacity!)
So now it's ordered, all I need to do now is put the bits together...

I have been very fortunate in being able to get the advice of a friend, who lives in Ireland (David's diagram) who has a similar yacht to ours and was able to give me some direction on how the plumbing could go together.
I will be using this solution with a couple of mods of mine.
(An electric Macerator pump, a slightly bigger air vent, plus a connection for pumping-out at the marina.)

I had to go back to the boat yesterday as I lost my wallet and my final place to look was the boat, yes, I had left it on board, a round trip of about 2.5 hours, I'll try not to do that again!

Winter Sailing in Wellington NZ

The only problem with winter sailing in Wellington is either too much wind or none but a really nice day for a flap!

Colonoscopy

A couple of weeks ago a friend sent me a email joke, I don't usually read them but this one made me laugh, I shouldn't have.
Later, on a fairly routine visit to the Dr. in relation to a minor issue, it was suggest that I should make an appointment for...\ Yes, you guessed right and its all true! (but mine was Klean-Prep)

I share the following email I think this explains the procedure much better than I could:

ABOUT THE WRITER: Dave Barry is a Pulitzer Prize-winning humour columnist for the Miami Herald.
Colonoscopy Journal:
I called my friend Andy Sable, a gastroenterologist, to make an appointment for a colonoscopy.

A few days later, in his office, Andy showed me a color diagram of the colon, a lengthy organ that appears to go all over the place, at one point passing briefly through Minneapolis .
Then Andy explained the colonoscopy procedure to me in a thorough, reassuring and patient manner.

I nodded thoughtfully, but I didn't really hear anything he said, because my brain was shrieking, 'HE'S GOING TO STICK A TUBE 17,000 FEET UP YOUR BEHIND!'

I left Andy's office with some written instructions, and a prescription for a product called 'MoviPrep,' which comes in a box large enough to hold a microwave oven. I will discuss MoviPrep in detail later; for now suffice it to say that we must never allow it to fall into the hands of America 's enemies..

I spent the next several days productively sitting around being nervous.

Then, on the day before my colonoscopy, I began my preparation. In accordance with my instructions, I didn't eat any solid food that day; all I had was chicken broth, which is basically water, only with less flavor.

Then, in the evening, I took the MoviPrep. You mix two packets of powder together in a one-liter plastic jug, then you fill it with lukewarm water. (For those unfamiliar with the metric system, a liter is about 32 gallons). Then you have to drink the whole jug. This takes about an hour, because MoviPrep tastes - and here I am being kind - like a mixture of goat spit and urinal cleanser, with just a hint of lemon.

The instructions for MoviPrep, clearly written by somebody with a great sense of humour, state that after you drink it, 'a loose, watery bowel movement may result.'

This is kind of like saying that after you jump off your roof, you may experience contact with the ground.

MoviPrep is a nuclear laxative. I don't want to be too graphic, here, but, have you ever seen a space-shuttle launch? This is pretty much the MoviPrep experience, with you as the shuttle. There are times when you wish the commode had a seat belt. You spend several hours pretty much confined to the bathroom, spurting violently. You eliminate everything. And then, when you figure you must be totally empty, you have to drink another liter of MoviPrep, at which point, as far as I can tell, your bowels travel into the future and start eliminating food that you have not even eaten yet.

After an action-packed evening, I finally got to sleep.

The next morning my wife drove me to the clinic. I was very nervous. Not only was I worried about the procedure, but I had been experiencing occasional return bouts of MoviPrep spurtage. I was thinking, 'What if I spurt on Andy?' How do you apologise to a friend for something like that? Flowers would not be enough.

At the clinic I had to sign many forms acknowledging that I understood and totally agreed with whatever the heck the forms said. Then they led me to a room full of other colonoscopy people, where I went inside a little curtained space and took off my clothes and put on one of those hospital garments designed by sadist perverts, the kind that, when you put it on, makes you feel even more naked than when you are actually naked..

Then a nurse named Eddie put a little needle in a vein in my left hand. Ordinarily I would have fainted, but Eddie was very good, and I was already lying down. Eddie also told me that some people put vodka in their MoviPrep..
At first I was ticked off that I hadn't thought of this, but then I pondered what would happen if you got yourself too tipsy to make it to the bathroom, so you were staggering around in full Fire Hose Mode. You would have no choice but to burn your house.

When everything was ready, Eddie wheeled me into the procedure room, where Andy was waiting with a nurse and an anesthesiologist. I did not see the 17,000-foot tube, but I knew Andy had it hidden around there somewhere. I was seriously nervous at this point..

Andy had me roll over on my left side, and the anesthesiologist began hooking something up to the needle in my hand.

There was music playing in the room, and I realised that the song was 'Dancing Queen' by ABBA. I remarked to Andy that, of all the songs that could be playing during this particular procedure, 'Dancing Queen' had to be the least appropriate.

'You want me to turn it up?' said Andy, from somewhere behind me..

'Ha ha,' I said. And then it was time, the moment I had been dreading for more than a decade. If you are squeamish, prepare yourself, because I am going to tell you, in explicit detail, exactly what it was like.

I have no idea. Really. I slept through it. One moment, ABBA was yelling 'Dancing Queen, feel the beat of the tambourine,' and the next moment, I was back in the other room, waking up in a very mellow mood.

Andy was looking down at me and asking me how I felt. I felt excellent. I felt even more excellent when Andy told me that It was all over, and that my colon had passed with flying colors. I have never been prouder of an internal organ.

And yes, I'm fine. K

More DIY

Another project that we can remove from the dreaded B list.
A set of shelves and cupboards in the sitting room, the gallery was reconverted into a workshop again, as it was the only space big enough to build the units without moving MDF dust throughout the house.

It was a bit of a mission fitting, as the total weight is just under 400Kg's, the whole thing is bolted to the floor and wall so in the event of an earthquake it should stay in place!
Only a little bit of finishing at the side and top.
There's even a little place for my Ferrari (model).

Then There was One!

We now have 'only' one small rabbit, Oscar (dog) scored a extra free dinner yesterday, I found him sitting with the evidence of bits of fur.- the only pieces left.
It's a pity but they make a big mess of the garden and lawn, little holes everywhere and they demolish any greenery in the vegetable garden.

More Projects

The 'B' project list has just been resurrected, again:
  •  Moulding profiles have been ordered to frame a few more of the artworks.
  • The MDF has been cut and delivered ready for the 'small library' in the sitting room.
  • Preliminary drawings of the 'new house' - this just in case we decide to downsize and the property market improves...??? (I should never have shown Mrs DIY how to use Autocad)
  • Fabric samples for the currtains.
  • Flooring samples.
  • A new body - my old origional one is getting a bit worn out.

My Glasses Have Returned

Some time ago I was lamenting the fact my glasses had all gone AWOL, well they are back. (18 January 2012)
I keep finding them everywhere, all in places were you would expect to find them, the bookcase, in the glass case, the car and even in my pocket.
Maybe there's a message here.
I wonder if I looked hard enough I might find all the $10.00 notes that I have misplaced...(in my dreams)

Wild Life!!

A couple of baby rabbits have a little home under the deck, maybe more?
Oscar (dog) really wants them, he spends a lot of time lying in wait for his free meal but they are a very fast and don't venture very far from home.

While we are talking about the dog, today he decided to dig up the entire garlic bed in search of something really important.
The new beds are constructed of wooden surrounds that lift the level up by 350mm, this is so I don't have to bend to far, (is this a sign of old age?) he succeeded in half emptying the one that was intended to be our years supply of Garlic, what a mess.

I was very angry, a total waste of time, he doesn't seem to understand the Anglo Saxon words I was using, but I think the delivery tone may have had some effect.
So now the bed has had anti-dog protection installed. I hope it works...

I'm Being Framed!

The framing of the 'artworks' has started, the mouldings have arrive from the wholesaler and now I'm a picture framer, this is a sample of the first batch - only 25 more frames to go.
It's a lot easier putting the sections together on the kitchen bench rather that struggling in the sea container that I use for a workshop.
I didn't ask permission from Mrs DIY but I promise to clean up after...
The art-works framed have now been hung, and they (modestly) look quite good.
Some days when I look at them my feelings range from what a load of rubbish to other days when I think they look OK.
The frames seem to put a full stop to the work and focus the mind on the art, maybe my next worry will be is I might sell (heaven forbid) some of them, then I will have to start again, filling the empty spaces in the gallery and house, on the other hand I will at last earn some $$$$'s
The last painting I sold, I calculated that it earned me $2.50 an hour so I'm not going to become wealthy.
Here's hoping, it looks as if the opening will be around Aug - Sept 2012.

Sunset

I had just finished walking Oscar (dog) and couldn't resist taking this picture of the sunset over the vineyard, it's getting dark early now with the sun going down around 1750hrs so the dog is getting an earlier walk, it's one of the problems having a black dog, you tend to loose sight of him in the dark.
I'm thinking of getting him one of those flashing red LED's for his collar.

Congratulations to Kobo

I take back it all back, the nasty things I have been thinking about Kobo.
We did it, I really mean they, the clever people who man, or women the help desks at Kobo, fixed the problem.
Thank you, to the help desk names of Maina S and Carmelia A, they were able to navigate me through the fix, via email.
Cheers, now I can get back to the books that I never read when I was younger, eg Sherlock Holmes ( a good read) and free...
Still like the real thing, they look nice on the shelf.

Kobo Continues

We are now up to 8 emails from Kobo who are endeavouring to resolve my problems with my Kobo Touch, the last was to enquire where it was purchased.
I hope they don't want me to go to Whitcoulls for a replacement unit, the very company that reneged on their gift vouchers by refusing to honour them.

Kobo eReader - AGAIN!! [Incident: 120423-000048]

Sorry to be such a grump about the Kobo eReader but the saga continues(seeThursday, 5 April 2012), since the forced Kobo upgrade, the website now hangs and comes up with error messages, and the computer refuses to talk to the reader.
I have un-installed the website and reinstalled 4 times, deleted all the program bits I can find, plus resetting the reader back to the factory settings, 4 times! - still not working!!!
They, Kobo have told me that they have escalated the problem to level 2 whatever that means.
Does this mean the Russia's are about to launch missiles?
Or in computer help desk speak does it mean? "this person is being a pain in the....". "maybe the escalate phrase may get him off our case".

The Power Plant

The final investment in the boat the D1 - 30 Volvo engine (A Perkins diesel that has been badge engineered by Volvo) this is the last spend, promise.
The installation cost - eye watering!
The only good bit is that it (the motor) has a 2 year warranty.

Gallery Entrance - at Last

The old steps were getting a little dangerous, the lumps of wood that we had used as a temporary measure 'three years ago' were rotting rather badly.
This was a little project that I had been putting off, so as we had already purchased  the flagstones...
Mrs DIY decided that the time had arrived.
Didn't take to long to lay, like a lot of stuff that's waiting for our attention, you wonder why you didn't do this before. Another tick on the 'list'!
Boat tomorrow...

Boat Dog Training 101

The first step in getting Oscar to be a boat dog, a still a very nervous nelly, he at least will now walk down the marina to the finger that we are moored.
The journey is negotiated very carefully down the middle of the pontoon, legs apart for balance and carefully not going anywhere near the edge and the 'nasty' black swans that patrol the marina like B&W police cars..

Our Easter...

The Easter project - Mrs DIY and I spent the weekend building a wall to create a small study or new nursery... for the daughter and son-in-law's Wellington cottage, this was done while they were away on holiday.
It all went well and was completed on Monday.  Finished on schedule!

The plasterer (Mrs DIY) and painter (Mrs DIY) did a great job, 'following' the written instructions by our daughter. ( see following email instructions from the the owners, which cracked us up...)

"The door is double-white pointer. There's some under the house too. Please remember to sand the grooves before and after priming carefully, so you can't see the paint lines or drips, if you are going to do that too. XXXX is happy to do that when we get home.
Can you use the the small fine rollers for the oil based paint.
Also with the rollers, can you use the synthetic ones, called Hayden Genius microfiber, they come in a box. I think you can get them from M10.
With the bed, I am sure it will be wrapped but will you make sure the mattress doesn't get dusty in the van.
Maybe we could Skype to discuss if you want....."

I wonder what the weather was like in London!

To celebrate the holiday, we ate a dark chocolate Easter Bunny that I 'found' in the pantry. I wonder who it belonged to...?

Yes, we did get a ''few hours of sailing around the harbour, the weather was just perfect, hope it will be just as good next weekend.

KoBo eReader - Review

If anyone is thinking of purchasing a KoBo eReader, my advice is don't, for the following reasons:
  • Their books are more expensive than Kindle (Amazon)
  • Their website is slow and clunky
  • Site is not user friendly
  • No magazines
  • Will only accept PayPal
  • You can only purchase their eBooks (KoBo)
  • Don't have full range, e.g. only 2 of the Millennium Trilogy (at time of writing)
  • Only have about 50  'free' books but millions of them!
Sorry to be so negative but the eReader unit is a big bag manure.
The user experience maybe different in other parts of the world but in New Zealand we are forced to go through Whitcoulls (NZ Bookstore chain) that is hanging on by its fingernails.(financial probs)
The question is, why should a local retailer control what I can read or purchase?.

Sailing...

At last Duamara has 'hit' the water, and it sails well, we hadn't forgotten how to sail, what a relief.
The main pushes the boat along very nicely, the sail-maker said it had good 'bones' and with the new flexi battens it has a good wing shape.
The only thing that needs to completing, is the dodger and sail cover, the man has promised me that it will be done by next Wednesday.
The motor has done it's sea trials, we can get, just on 7 knots out of her into a headwind, the new three blade folding prop works well.
Our only challenge is Oscar (dog) he is absolutely petrified of just walking down the marina, we finally, after two visits, got him to venture down the finger that our boat is moored.
He was visited by 3 black swans that hang around the marina, normally they would be fair game but he just sat still and growled.
It's going to take a bit of patience to get him on board and be a 'boat dog' so it's slowly slowly.

What's in a Name

Our boat is going to have a name change, from Thursday's Child of Lee to Duamara.
Firstly because TCL is a bit of a mouthful, so after much discussion Duamara was agreed on, the name is from the Assam tea plantation in India where Mrs DIY grew up, the plantation was cut out of the jungle after WW2 by her father and managed until his retirement in about 1965, when they returned to England to play 'golf'.
The tea company that he worked for was called James Warren, who I think are still in existence.

Still Getting There!

The motor and propeller shaft is now fitted, the new (Volvo D1-30) motor will be great, its compact size will make it relatively "easy' to service, the only problem (would you believe it) is that the water trap/muffler (new) doesn't fit, that's the $80 dollar one and we need to get a different one from Australia, we don't have the correct size in NZ. - Cost est at about $350.00!!
This is supposed to be the country that promotes itself as a great boat building repair destination, as the Tui beer ad says - "Yeah Right".
Truly, I try very hard not to be grumpy but I've heard all this before, in my past life I was surrounded by cost over runs and supplier excuses from, 'there's been a flood in the basement', to 'the freight forwarder has put the product on the wrong flight', I've had 25 years of listening to these 'reasons', and I must admit, contributed a number myself..
The launching has been delayed again by a further 'few' days, maybe next week, still the weather forecast for Wellington looks good.

Over the Hill

I thought I should include a couple of pictures of what I mean when I  say 'Over the Hill',  it doesn't refer to me!
These were taken at the summit of the road, not the top of the hill...

In Reflection

The yacht has been a bit of a mission but we will have ended up with almost new boat, the only things that are not new are the hull and deck plus the mast, 3 old sails, anchor and Furlex.
The rest including all rigging and halyards, wiring, motor, instruments, heads, prop, prop shaft, upholstery, internal bulkheads, galley, fitted furniture, interior deck lining's, and stove.
Outside we have a new dodger, jamb cleats and a repaint.
I've still to find out if the Wallas heater, and the fridge work, I've had a temporary work around on the fridge and it looks as if it still works, the heater makes all the right noises, we will know when we get the replacement fridge thermostat and the new switch for the heater.
The inside looks OK with it's new lining and deck fittings and LED lighting system, while I was doing the rebuild we insulated the hull with 40mm of polystyrene then lined it with Autex fabric, as all the portholes have been replace we have happily been able to install a owner designed double glazing system, using the remains of the old porthole frames, looks quite professional, still time will tell.

Wednesday, 7 March 2012

One More Step...

The mast has been stepped, all it needs now, is installation of the new motor and prop shaft and we can 'hit' the water.
A new dodger is being made and the old mainsail has had a makeover, I was contemplating a new one but $6000.00 was a bit much at this time.
As we will not be racing, only cruising, a new main is not a priority.

Update to Previous Post

Tomorrow

Where did Summer Go?

Tomorrow

Saturday 3
Rain, heavy at times, easing to showers in the afternoon. Strong southerlies developing in the morning, gale gusting 100 km/h for a time in exposed places.
Issued: 3:00am 2 Mar (copy of local weather report)
What a summer! The grass hasn't stopped growing (rain), the grapes on the vines are rubbish (rain and low sunshine) the grapes are what they call hen and chickens, that's different sized berries in the bunch = low sugar=poor quality.
I would not like to own a vineyard at this time, it would be nervous breakdown territory, last year the bottom dropped out of the wine market, now this, thankfully we only drink the stuff.
For the past few days there has been an enormous storm brewing over the Tasman Sea, the weather office is now predicting the possibility of a 'weather bomb', that's when things can get very violent, very quickly and have advised all boating people and drivers on the roads to stay at home and watch the TV.. great!

More little Challenges!

Well, the boat is sitting on the 'hard' at Seaview Marina waiting for the engine, a small delay, as we need a new propeller shaft, the old one is metric and would you believe it we need an imperial shaft to fit the new bearing and new folding propeller! and this being a country of everything being metric.

The mast also needed all new stainless steel rigging as the original stuff was way past its use-by date.
I had half expected that the standing rigging may have been a bit dicy and maybe having to replace  a couple of fittings, not the whole lot and now a new prop shaft - bum!

Its a bit strange driving down the driveway with no boat lurking behind the hedge, I have no excuses of having to go to 'the boat' to do some little job...

Mrs DIY has 'suggested' that I must stay with my primary project of painting and getting ready for the 'Grand Opening" of the gallery in May.

There, I've said it, May, (this year 2012) so no more excuses...

Moving Day!

At last the big day has arrived, the boat was lifted over the hedge onto the waiting transporter ready for the first part of its journey to the sea,.I couldn't get a shot of the boat hanging over the trees as I was hanging onto a rope to turn the boat around, a very scary exercise!.
Because the load was oversize (4m beam) a separate pilot vehicle was need to get it 'over the hill'.
After it was loaded and driven off and because I was so 'emotionaly drained', I waited an hour before heading over to Seaview where the boat was to be unloaded.
I arrived to find it sitting in its cradle waiting for the new motor to be installed, all I had to do was pay the man the money - 'no cash no spash'.
The motor should be installed by the end of next week then it's re-stepping the mast, then into the water, or maybe its 'into the water then re-stepping the mast', I don't know, but it's soon.

On the Move

Just received the message that the transport company are able to move our boat from its current home on our front lawn to Seaview Marina in Wellington Yeah!!!
So, Wednesday next, the boat gets loaded on to the transporter for its 2 hour trip over the Rimatuka 'hill' to Wellington, the top of the road is only 500m (1600ft) above sea level, it doesn't sound much but it's a long steep drive up and over.

Transport

The boat is finished - enough to take the road trip from Martinborough to Wellington, the motor is sitting waiting to be installed but unfortunately no transport.

The closest company that specialises in moving boats of this size, is in Auckland the other end of the North Island and they are not sure when they might be in Wellington and able to do the move.
So it's sit and wait, and try not to get to grumpy...

The only bright spot is that I will be able to finish some of the small jobs that I was intending on doing at Seaview (marina). oh well, sigh....

The Mast - Cables

A Quick post while I'm waiting for my electric drill to recharge.

The riggers, who took the mast down after the auction almost 18 months ago, as a 'joke' decided to cut the cables about 25mm from the exit holes instead of just unplugging them from the deck fittings, very funny fellows, I have had to run a new set.
The marine cable is a tad expensive, so that's why I'm a bit grumpy

It wasn't to difficult but unfortunately lost the aerial cable that was just poking out the bottom, luckily, I had run an extra pull-through with the Tri light cable, so it shouldn't be too difficult to get the new one to the bottom.
I have only about 2-3 days more work, then it (the boat) can be sent 'over the hill' to it's new home in the water at Seaview Marina.

PS. Cutless is a bearing, cutlass is for cutting your head off - sorry for the confusion (Wednesday, 7 December 2011)
